Many major factors contributed to the November 10, 2020 agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan that was brokered by Russia.
The most important one is the presence of corruption in Armenia, be it in the past administrations in and present oligarchs working incessantly to sack the government’s coffers leading to the downfall of the Pashinian government.
Governments work with a defined budget and when the budget is depleted it has minimum resources for defense let alone enough to support itself in running a country.
Second, is the total lack of allies that did not acknowledge the independence of Artsakh. Sometimes the silence of your allies is more damaging than the outspoken enemy.
Third is the lack of funds that flowed from diaspora to Armenia. Many well-off establishments and wealthy individuals remained on the sidelines. It is noteworthy to point out that these establishments have gained substantially from their Armenian consumers.
Furthermore, lack of unity amongst Armenian political parties that should have rallied behind Pashinian and his government. Bickering amongst the different political parties even though meant well was at a bad timing and brought a government in paralysis. It’s worthwhile to mention that there were few political parties that worked and sabotaged Pashinian to bring about the surrender of the three regions to the enemy.
Now these naysayers and all those opposed to the so-called agreement are pointing the finger at Pashinian, and blaming him for signing an agreement that had no gains for Armenia. But this is not the end. Let’s wait and witness how it will manifest.
Pashinian stated that lack of manpower and inferior armanants were the main reasons for signing the agreement. In reality it was a wise move to forestall the bloodshed and save the lives of Armenian soldiers fighting in the trenches and the front lines.
This lends us to wonder what the political parties and individuals who are so eager to see Pashinian resign would have done.
