YEREVAN. /ARKA/. The first-ever Atomic Summit is set to take place in Moscow on September 23, organized by the Rosatom state corporation, and Armenia has been invited to participate. Sona Harutyunyan, the press secretary of the Armenian Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, which is responsible for the energy sector, told ARKA, “We have already received an invitation through the Foreign Ministry. The decision regarding Armenia’s participation in the summit will be made at a later time.” Previously, Alexey Likhachev, the CEO of Rosatom, announced that the summit is part of the events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry. The Armenian NPP, the only one in the South Caucasus region, is located near the town of Metsamor, about 30 km west of Yerevan. The plant accounts for about 40% of the total electricity generation. Its service life has been prolonged until 2026, and work on repeated prolongation for another 10 years is in progress.Armenian government wants to have a new nuclear power plant with a capacity of 1000-1,200 MW to be built in 8-10 years.
