Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan noted that air pollution in the city persists from mid-November through mid-March and, during a working meeting at City Hall, explained that since 2024 the municipality has implemented an air-quality monitoring system with GIS-linked devices installed at major construction sites, with data from 175 devices showing worsening air quality beginning in mid-November and improving around mid-March, a situation he attributed to complex factors such as Armenia’s geographical position, climatic conditions, and air inversion that traps pollutants for extended periods, emphasizing that addressing the problem requires complex measures beyond Yerevan, including the long-term creation of about 100 hectares of evergreen forests to serve as a barrier against prevailing winds and, in the short term, achieving a targeted 20% improvement in air quality within 10 days, while also announcing that new regulations taking effect in December will require construction sites to install dust-proof nets.
