Have you ever noticed how the more things change the more they also stay the same? I like to say that the only things that really change are technology and style. For me… I’m very grateful to the wonderful invention called air conditioning for example… Today there are so many wonderful new inventions and services that we would have thought impossible or science fiction only a few years ago. But with all these wonderful changes there are also so many things that stay the same…. Do any of you have teenagers? The female eye roll or the male grunt was a staple in our house.
As I wait for my Uber ride…. Something impossible to consider 10 years ago… I’m reminded and impressed with our wonderful new world. If you’re an entrepreneur, you are in the business of solving problems and creating new ideas to make our world a better place.
This made me think of a conversation I recently had with a client. His office was in a beautiful complex with other interesting businesses. I was led to the conference room for a short wait and admired the product samples arranged in the display case. I thought to myself: this, was a high-tech firm doing some cutting-edge work. After the owner walked in and we exchanged some pleasantries he made a statement that still sticks with me today…. He said, “Our business is unique and very complicated. Do you really think you can help?” He was so focused on his problem that he had turned a mole hill into a mountain.
I said to him, “The four problems you have are that you need more people to know what is that you’re offering; that you need more liquidity to grow; that you need more people to work smarter and lastly; you need to keep delivering high value to your clients. Am I right?” He said: “Have you been spying on us?” He was caught off guard that I knew so much about the
problems he faced daily. I call them the Pillars of Pain.
