On Sunday April 23 at 5 PM the Armenian Apostolic Church of Upland held a solemn event commemorating the 108th anniversary of the 1915-1923 Turkish-executed Armenian Genocide. The event was organized by the Armenian Apostolic Church of Upland Youth Committee. Please see the flyer attached. U.S. Congress- woman Judy Chu served as the keynote speaker. Other speakers included Mayor of Upland, Mr. Bill Velto. Also in attendance were Mayor-Pro-Tem Carlos Garcia and various members of the Upland City Council who joined nearly 100 members of the community. In a note ad- dressed to Rev. Deacon Kevork Hallajian, Mayor Velto said: “I felt the passion from the congregation for the living and reverence for the memories of those whose lives were taken during the Armenian Genocide. My own voice was shaking as I spoke.” Little bit of history about the Armenian com- munity in the sur- rounding areas. There are around 750 families living in Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Montclair, Claremont, and Upland. The Armenian Apostolic Church of Upland started serving the local American Armenian community in 2020.
On January 6, of that year the first service was performed. The community continuously experiences growth. There are now over 70 families registered as full fledged members of the independent parish of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Upland. The spiritual services are broadcast every Sunday via the Facebook page of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Upland.
