YEREVAN. /ARKA/. The Armenian government is considering expansion of the country’s two major airports -Zvartnots in Yerevan and Shirak in the second-largest city of Gyumri, Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Minister Gnel Sanosyan told the parliament today.
Sanosyan emphasized that Armenia’s aviation sector has seen a significant growth in recent years and this trend continues. According to him, Armenian airlines have contributed to this growth and now every third passenger flies with Armenian airlines.
The minister noted that Gyumri airport will be used more and will increase its role when the Yerevan-Gyumri section of the North-South road is completed, which will make it possible to travel faster by car from one city to another.
Eight new airlines began operating flights to and from Armenia in 2023, the Civil Aviation Committee said last week. In 2023, regular flights were made from Armenia to 49 cities in 23 countries. The passenger flow was 46.7 percent more compared to 2022 growing to over 5.4 million, including over 1.8 million transported by local airlines, which accounted for 33.5 percent of the total, up from o 24 percent of the previous year.
