Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Friday that Armenia’s peace agenda does not require further socialization, as it has already been mandated by the people. Speaking at the “Comprehensive Security and Resilience” international conference in Yerevan, Pashinyan said the concept of peace was authored by the Armenian public, not imposed from above. “I don’t speak about socializing the idea of peace because I believe the Armenian people themselves are the authors of the peace concept,” he said. “It’s like explaining the content of a literary work to Hovhannes Tumanyan himself—I don’t need to do that.” Pashinyan argued that his position as prime minister is, in itself, evidence of public support for the peace agenda. “Do you need proof? I am standing here as the Prime Minister of Armenia. There is no greater proof than that,” he said. He noted that among segments of the political and intellectual elite, there have been calls and efforts to remove him from office. “If you conducted a survey among the political elite—and partly among the intellectual elite—you’d get a strong percentage saying I shouldn’t be Prime Minister. There have been efforts, calls, rallies, hybrid actions, and so on,” he said. Asked why the Government remains stable despite this opposition, Pashinyan said it is because the ruling majority gives political form to values that originate from the people. “This is a turning point in our thou- sand-year history,” he said. “Historically, elites created narratives and imposed them on the people. Today, it’s the opposite: the political leadership is shaping into policy what comes from the people.” Concluding his remarks, Pashinyan said the peace agenda does not need to be artificially promoted. “The peace agenda is a policy entrusted and mandated by the people. That’s why it does not need socialization—it is already socialized, even before being fully articulated. Of course, this does not mean there shouldn’t be dialogue. It just takes place in a different format,” he said.
