November 26 was a special day at Holy Martyrs Ferahian Armenian School as community members gathered for the annual Thanksgiving Eve basketball game between students and alumni, the inauguration of the newly renovated gymnasium named “Masis and Manoosh Ghevondian” in honor of its generous benefactors, and the unveiling of the “Dr. Melina Esrailian Wall of Champions,” made possible through the contributions of Ferrahian alumna Dr. Melina Esrailian, class of 1992, her husband Eric Esrailian, and their families, with School Board Vice-President Garo Hovannisian highlighting the joy of reconnecting with the Ferrahian community, celebrating the long-awaited renovation of a gym befitting the Armens program, and honoring the Ghevondian family’s decades-long, quiet yet unwavering financial, logistical, and generational support to the school, including Baron Masis Ghevondian’s donation of a van for the team and the family’s significant contribution toward the gym’s renovation following his passing last year, ensuring that future generations of students will play in a gymnasium bearing the family’s name, while Hovannisian also paid tribute to Dr. Melina Esrailian as a former standout Armens basketball player under legendary coach Varant Vartabedian, a member of the pioneering Ferrahian team that competed in China, and a devoted supporter of the school whose family continues to embody Ferrahian values, leading to the formal dedication of the Wall of Champions in her honor, followed by emotional remarks recognizing Coach Vartabedian—known affectionately as Baron Varant—for more than 40 years of selfless service, humility, and mentorship across generations, culminating in the unveiling of a section of the basketball court dedicated to him, alongside special recognition of Ferrahian School Board members Alex Beylerian and Robert Momdjian for their behind-the-scenes leadership in completing the renovation, with attendees including Board Chair Vahe Benlian, Vice-Principal Vartges Nalbandian, alumni, families, and supporters, remarks underscoring Ferrahian’s family-centered spirit and lasting impact, reflections from alumnus Andre Aharonian on the school’s role in shaping his professional and Armenian identity, and the official opening of the gym marked by alumni and student basketball games filled with enthusiasm, pride, and a spirit of love and warmth that transcended competition.
