The United States and the European Union have welcomed the removal of re- strictions on direct trade between Armenia and Turkey, describing the move as an important step toward strengthening economic ties and promoting regional stability. In a statement, the U.S. Embassy said the development demonstrates the commitment of both countries to expanding economic relations and fostering lasting peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus. The European Union also praised the decision and encouraged the two coun- tries to continue cooperation, including efforts aimed at opening their shared bor- der. “We encourage both countries to continue their cooperation, including toward the opening of the common border,” a spokesperson for the EU External Action Service stated, adding that the move could help expand trade and economic op- portunities between Armenia and Turkey while positively impacting the broader South Caucasus region and the EU. Earlier, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keceli announced that preparatory work for launching direct trade between Armenia and Turkey had been completed as of May 11, 2026. Under the new arrangement, goods shipped from Turkey to Armenia through third countries will now be allowed to list Armenia as the final destination. Like- wise, goods shipped from Armenia via the same route may now officially desig- nate Turkey as the country of origin. Until now, trade between Armenia and Turkey had largely been conducted indirectly through intermediary countries.
